Crispy baked tofu is easy, quick and foolproof. So if you’re a fool and you’re reading this, you’ll be fine, promise! It is only 4 total ingredients. After a quick toss to coat the tofu, pop it in the oven and voila.
This tofu is hands-down one of our favorite ways to eat it. We end up making it multiple times per week and it somehow goes with anything and everything. It has the perfect crisp texture and umami flavor. If preparing tofu scares you, you’re not alone! Many people share this fear, perhaps because of the blob-like nature of it? I’m not entirely sure actually.
What You’ll Need For Crispy Baked Tofu:
- Firm or extra-firm tofu
- Tamari or soy sauce
- Olive oil
- Cornstarch
It all starts with either firm or extra-firm tofu. To be honest, they are very similar and can vary anyway, depending on the brand. It helps to press your tofu beforehand, especially if it is firm (higher water content than extra firm). However, in a pinch, you can totally skip that step and just pat it down with paper towels to remove any excess water. Especially if you’re making a sauce to go with it.
Tamari is the miracle ingredient here (soy sauce works too). I like to use a low-sodium option because why would I choose to have high sodium when the low one is staring at me on the shelf. To each their own! Tamari has a delicious, deep, umami flavor that seeps right into the tofu and transforms it into addicting bites.
Cornstarch and olive oil combine to create a crispy exterior. Too much cornstarch is no bueno as we have learned from experience. It gets too gummy and ruins everything. Our recipe has the perfect amount, that’s why they’re paying us the big bucks (they’re not but they will be soon – someone let them know).
Ways to Enjoy:
Toss the crispy tofu pieces into salads, Buddha bowls, noodle dishes, and stir fries. Our favorite way to enjoy them is topped with a creamy Thai peanut sauce and served with rice and steamed broccoli.
